We are shown how moves, although not actually injuring anyone, are not fake, and extreme training is required to be able to perform the stunts without being harmed. We are also treated to interviews with the family of Mick Foley and what it is like for them to know their father literally puts his life on the line every week and how it feels to have other children call their father a “fake”. Vince McMahon, owner of World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, also makes a few appearances, responding to criticism on various wrestling situations, including, once again, his real athletes very real orginization being called fake by sources such as USA Today and various news programs.

The subject of Paul Hough’s documentary is the middle-American phenomenon known as backyard wrestling, in which young men attempt to emulate the bloody high-jinks of professional wrestling using decidedly amateur means — homemade rings, built out of mattresses and tarp; homemade weapons, usually involving barbed wire wrapped around a club or a board; and homemade gore, here created, as the professional wrestlers do, by cutting the forehead with hidden razor blades. “The Backyard” is often hard to watch, given the level of hideous mayhem that seems to be standard for these performances. Though much of the violence is faked, there also appears to be a very high rate of masochism among the participants, as if backyard wrestling were the male symptom analogous to cutting or purging among girls. It releases tension, but at a considerable price. An astounding anthropological study of that strange tribe known as the American teenager.

Interviews with modern stars, such as Hulk Hogan and veterans Classy Freddie Blassie and Killer Kowalski, wrestling historians, and even college professors tackle the subject from all sides, but the commentary is secondary to the spectacle provided by a rich array of clips–everything from prissy Gorgeous George’s ringside sashays to midget wresting to a montage featuring the ubiquitous folding chair to the head. The Unreal Story of Pro Wrestling tends to emphasize the freak-show elements of the sport–which, granted, are much of the documentary’s fun–but does capture the showmanship and crazy energy that has transformed a sideshow attraction into a gonzo spectacle in a format that manages to be informative and fun at the same time.
